Way back in 1789, the wisest words ever written in the history of mankind were jotted down by none other than the King of Prussia. He said, “the only, absolute and best friend that a man has, in this selfish world, the only one that will not betray or deny him, is his dog.”
Other than force of gravity, this is probably the least deniable fact of all time!
However, we live in a world that is often less than ideal for our furry friends where they can begin to experience poor health including digestive issues, skin problems, anxiety, sadness and so much more. There are many possible causes for this but one cause that links them all is disruption to their gut microbiomes.
A dog’s gut microbiome is the foundation of good health and it occurs when there is a healthy balance between the good (helpful) and bad (potentially harmful) bacteria and yeast in their digestive system. In humans, clinical studies have shown that 80% of the immune system is in the gut, and the majority of the body’s serotonin (“happy neurotransmitter”) is produced in the gut.
We believe this is a similar situation with dogs. An unhealthy gut for dogs means that not only is their gut digestion unhealthy but so is their immune system. A non-functioning immune system means a dog is more likely to get sick.
There exist several options to improve a dogs microbiome including a healthy diet, probiotics, clean water and plenty of love and exposure to the outdoors. However, there is truly nothing more impactful than replacing your dogs “sick” microbiome with that from an exceptionally healthy microbiome from another dog in a process called Fecal Microbiota Transplants (FMT).
FMT or (fecal microbiota transplant) for dogs is the simple process of transferring good fecal bacteria and other microbes from a healthy dog into another dog.
